Posted: 21st November 2025

Sixth Form pupils studying Performing Arts, Music, Business and Economics enjoyed a highly informative and engaging session this week with Adrian Jackson, who served until early 2025 as CEO and Artistic Director of both the Grand Theatre in Wolverhampton and the Garrick Theatre in Lichfield. Adrian, whose career in theatre began more than 30 years ago as a musician in the orchestra pits of London’s West End, brought a wealth of professional experience to share with pupils.

During the session, Adrian offered a rare behind-the-scenes look at how large commercial theatres operate. He discussed in detail how theatres plan their annual finances, manage profit and loss, and develop a repertoire that appeals to a diverse range of audiences throughout the year. Pupils were particularly interested in the complexities of marketing productions to different demographics and how programming decisions can shape audience engagement.

Adrian also highlighted the important role theatres play as charitable organisations. He explained how institutions like the Grand Theatre work with community groups across Wolverhampton, creating outreach programmes and cultural opportunities designed to benefit local residents.

The talk provided valuable real-life context for students’ studies, demonstrating the deep connection between the creative and commercial aspects of the performing arts sector. Pupils left with a stronger understanding of the challenges and rewards involved in leading major cultural venues, as well as the vital impact theatres can have on their communities.
