Rotary Youth Leadership Awards Success

Posted: 1st December 2025

Sixth Former Daniella returned inspired and empowered after taking part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). The programme is designed to develop young people’s leadership skills while having fun and making connections. For Daniella, this was through a series of challenges, workshops, and outdoor activities.

The experience was transformative. “It was a journey of discovering my potential,” she reflected.

RYLA offers young people the chance to step outside their comfort zones, embrace new challenges, and form lasting friendships – all while deepening their understanding of what true leadership means. For Daniella, it was a brilliant opportunity to test her limits, build resilience and learn to lead with purpose and empathy.

During the five-day residential programme, participants quickly moved past the early introductions and immersed themselves in a wide range of activities. From high ropes and canoeing to laser tag, zip wires, axe throwing and raft building, each challenge offered valuable lessons. Daniella discovered that leadership isn’t about taking control – it’s about guiding, supporting, and uplifting those around you.

Throughout the week, Daniella demonstrated the core Rotary values in action:

  • Leadership: Taking initiative during group tasks and motivating her peers.
  • Service: Supporting teammates during physical challenges.
  • Integrity: Competing honestly and fairly.
  • Fellowship: Building friendships with students from a wide variety of backgrounds.
  • Diversity: Learning to collaborate with people with different ideas, strengths and personalities.

A highlight of the programme was a motivational workshop led by David Hyner. The multiple award-winning speaker is known for his dynamic sessions on goal setting and purpose. Daniella came away inspired to push beyond her perceived limits and embrace new opportunities.

Reflection of Daniella’s experience

Daniella acknowledged the remarkable personal growth she experienced. Once unsure of her leadership abilities, quiet in group settings and hesitant to speak up, she now feels far more confident and self-assured. Furthermore, she shared that she now views leadership as an act of service rather than authority and understands that mistakes are an important part of growth. She now feels equipped to encourage others to share their ideas and is committed to listening and leading with empathy.

This newfound confidence has motivated Daniella to take on more leadership roles within school and the wider community. In addition she hopes to continue supporting Rotary initiatives and further develop as a leader who listens, supports and serves.

The final part of her experience, was to deliver a presentation to local Rotary members, showcasing her learning and achievements from the RYLA programme. Her confidence shone through, and she proved a true credit to Tettenhall College.
