Posted: 12th May 2025

Sixth Form pupil, Matthew has been awarded the prestigious Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, the highest accolade in the programme designed to push young people beyond their limits.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is not for the faint-hearted. It takes resilience, courage and unwavering motivation to complete. From logging over 12 months of volunteering and fitness, to spending six months mastering a new skill, and completing a demanding five-day residential, Matthew’s journey concluded in a challenging five-day expedition through wild, remote country – a true test of endurance and commitment.

In recognition of this remarkable achievement, Matthew attended a special tea party on Friday 9th May 2025 at Buckingham Palace, hosted by His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh who reminded all recipients:

“The path to achieving a Gold Award is not an easy one — it demands resilience, dedication, and a willingness to step beyond comfort… You are here today because you chose to rise to that challenge.”

Family, pupils and teachers at Tettenhall College have praised Matthew’s achievement, describing it as a milestone not just of perseverance, but of character.

Subject leader of Humanities and DofE Coordinator, Miss Cross expressed how proud she is of Matthew’s achievement. “I am incredibly proud of Matthew and his outstanding achievement. Completing the Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award is a powerful testament to Matthew’s determination and resilience. A few people commit to something so demanding and see it through – so I truly hope he feels as proud of himself as everyone is of him at Tettenhall College.”

As Matthew moves forward, his Gold Award will stand not only as a mark of personal triumph, but as a powerful signal to universities, employers, and communities of a young person willing to lead, serve, and grow.
