International Students
Tettenhall is fortunate to have a small and select international group of boarders drawn mostly from the Pacific Rim, Europe and further afield. Our international students add cultural diversity to the school coummunity. They are integrated fully with the other pupils and they receive specialist English teaching as part of the curriculum, thus enabling them to gain the most from their education with us.
International pupils can attend for a term or a year although many stay for the whole of a GCSE or A Level course and subsequently gain the grades to proceed to University in the UK.
All international boarders must have a UK guardian whom they are able to stay with during the half-term breaks if they are unable to return home. The School can provide guardians if parents have difficulty in finding someone suitable.
English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Department
English is today's international language and it is therefore essential that every overseas student is able to use it effectively. Few of the international students who arrive here are fully competent in English. Neither are they complete beginners: Tettenhall College does not currently offer a Summer School for international students. However, some students, particularly those from mainland China have benefited greatly from attending an English course elsewhere during the summer holidays prior to joining the College.
The English language underpins every mainstream subject, giving the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Department a unique role in supporting pupils' academic goals. Support is provided on an individual or group basis, students attend EFL/EAL lessons when home students have mainstream English or Modern Foreign Language lessons. In addition, language support is offered in subject lessons whenever possible. This has been most successful and well received. Public examinations in EFL are taken at all levels which include the Cambridge exams, IGCSE and IELTS. Many parents recognise the significant advantages for their children in the job market if they can operate effectively in English.
EFL tuition is provided at no extra charge.
Pastoral Care
Integration into the wider life of the School is important for the student's language skills, as well as for their welfare and social development. A key ingredient at the early stages of a student's career is to ensure the students are able to adapt and become confident in their new culture. The mentoring system and the pastoral care system which includes the Boarding House Staff, EFL/EAL department, Tutors and Heads of Year, all assist the students to make a smooth transition and to integrate within the community.
All International students are encouraged to participate and are always included in activities, trips, teams and House competitions. All our international students are given the opportunity to develop their leadership and mentoring skills within the School and the Boarding Houses.
There is an induction programme put together for all international students in the Boarding Houses that is annually reviewed and developed, with input from the students themselves. The School is committed to making every effort to improve and ease the passage of international students as they embark on their education at Tettenhall College.
