The Early Years Foundation Stage

The Early Years Foundation Stage is a critical stage in a child's development. It is the foundation on which children build the rest of their lives and should not be seen just as a preparation for KS1 -the next stage in their learning. Children develop rapidly during this time - physically, intellectually, emotionally and socially. High quality education during this time makes a positive contribution to children's early development, enabling them to build on this foundation throughout their lives and so providing a sound basis for lifelong learning.

There are six areas covered in the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) educational programmes:

  • Personal, Social and Emotional Development;
  • Communication, Language and Literacy;
  • Problem Solving, Reasoning and Numeracy;
  • Knowledge and Understanding of the World;
  • Physical Development;
  • Creative Development.

None of these areas of Learning and Development is delivered in isolation from the others. They are equally important and depend on each other to support a rounded approach to child development. All the areas are delivered through planned, purposeful play, with a balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities. We believe in the need for a broad education, with the emphasis upon the acquisition of the Key Skills in Literacy and Numeracy.

In Reception, pupils are introduced to a synthetic phonics programme that enriches and enhances the key skills taught in Literacy. We support children's learning and competence in communicating, speaking and listening, being read to and beginning to read and write. We also work to give children the confidence, opportunity, encouragement, support and disposition to use their skills in a range of situations and for a range of purposes. Numeracy introduces the fundamentals of working with numbers and is designed to lead to a full understanding of basic mathemtical concepts. We support children in developing their understanding of problem solving, reasoning and numeracy in a broad range of contexts in which they can explore, enjoy, learn, practise and talk about their work. We offer opportunities for these skills to be practised, in order to give children confidence and competence in their use.

Every child is given individual attention. We believe that children learn through direct experiences that involve exploration and discovery that are child-centred and where provision for learning builds on what children already know and can do through a balance between adult and child-led activities.
