The Curriculum
The emphasis in Upper School is on academic achievement. Pupils' progress is monitored continuously by Form Teachers and Personal Tutors. School examinations are held at the end of each academic year, full reports are issued twice a year and we send parents details of pupils' attainment, effort and grades at regular intervals, known as module periods, throughout each term.
Key Stage 3 is completed in the first years of Upper School before pupils move on to Key Stage 4, for GCSE. Pupils are streamed or setted in Years 7 and 8, and setted in Year 9 and above. Curriculum outlines are published for each of the subject areas in both Key Stages.
At GCSE, all pupils take the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. They choose further options from a wide range of other subjects. The GCSE Course Guide provides full details of the curriculum in Years 10 and 11.
The Upper School is subdivided into discrete academic departments, all of which are well resourced. A modern ICT network spans every area of the School and all the classrooms are linked directly to it. The pupils have eay access to these facilities and ICT is integrated throughout the curriculum. A spacious library houses 14,000 volumes and provides access to other research tools such as the internet. A modern purpose-built Science Department is named after Sir Arthur Harden, a former pupil of the School who won a Nobel Prize for Chemistry.
