English is today’s international
language and it is therefore essential that every overseas
student is able to use it effectively.
The English language underpins every mainstream subject,
giving the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) Department
a unique role in supporting pupils’ academic goals.
Support is provided on an individual or group basis. Many
parents recognise the significant advantages for their children
in the job market if they can operate effectively in English.
EFL tuition is provided at no extra charge.
Overseas pupils come at different stages
of their school career. Some join for just one year in order
to become proficient in the English language.
Others arrive aged eleven, fourteen or sixteen, specifically
to take their GCSE, AS and A level examinations, before going
on to a British university.
Overseas students make up approximately 11% of our total
intake.
The majority of overseas pupils are given EFL lessons
in place of mainstream English and often in place of a foreign
language as well.
If it is clear that their English is of a high enough
standard for them to study GSCE English, they can do so.
When timetabling allows, some in-lesson support is offered
by a member of the EFL Department in curriculum areas such
as Science or Business Studies.
Other departments within the school are encouraged to ask
for support and provide appropriate material for use within
the EFL classroom.
In addition some formal EFL lessons are based on more
subject specific material such as English for Business Studies.
This is motivational for pupils as it links with GCSE mainstream
subjects.
The EFL Department also encourages overseas pupils to integrate
into the life of the School.
This can be helped by mixing with other nationalities,
exploring issues of cultural interest and by taking part
in extra curricular activities.
The teaching of language involves close personal relationships.
The EFL Department is therefore well placed to play an important
role in the pastoral care of overseas pupils.
This will support the Boarding House staff’s work
in areas, settling in to a new way of life, understanding
regulations and their importance and so on.
In addition, EFL staff are often in a position to offer
advice about subject choices, study skills, personal statements
for UCAS forms, letters of application, visa and passport
problems and all kinds of other important issues.
